Rajkummar Rao is set to take on the lead role in the much-anticipated biopic based on the life of former Indian cricket captain Sourav Ganguly. The film has been a topic of discussion for some time, and recently, the cricketer himself confirmed the news, also hinting at its expected release timeline.
While addressing the media in Bardhaman, West Bengal, on Thursday, former BCCI president and ex-Indian cricket team skipper Sourav Ganguly spoke about his long-awaited biopic. He confirmed that Rajkummar Rao would portray him on screen but noted that scheduling conflicts would delay the film’s release.
Rajkummar Rao to play Sourav Ganguly in his biopic
“From what I’ve heard, Rajkummar Rao will play the role (the titular role)… but there are issues with dates… so it will take more than a year to hit the screens,” Ganguly was quoted as saying by news agency ANI.
This announcement is particularly significant given that several Bollywood actors, including Ayushmann Khurrana and Ranbir Kapoor, were previously rumoured to be contenders for the role.
Rao has previously headlined another biographical drama based on the life of visually impaired industrialist and Bollant Industries founder, Srikanth Bolla. Directed by Tushar Hiranandani, the film also starred Jyothika, Alaya F, and Sharad Kelkar in pivotal roles. His portrayal of Bolla was widely praised for its depth and authenticity.

Looking ahead, Rajkummar will soon be seen alongside Baby John star Wamiqa Gabbi in Bhool Chuk Maaf. The teaser of the upcoming family comedy-drama was released just days ago, featuring the lead characters setting a wedding date.
